AXA Mexico Group, Pedro and Elena Hernandez, and Elisa Carrillo Cabrera AC are collaborating on a project aimed at protecting the Caribbean flamingo and its habitat. The initiative seeks to further research into the red flamingo, a species found in tropical regions across America, the Antilles, the Yucatán Peninsula, northern Colombia and Venezuela, southern Florida, and the Galapagos Islands.
The project also aims to increase environmental awareness about the protected natural areas of the Yucatán Peninsula. These include reserves such as the Ría Celestún Biosphere, the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, as well as Petenes in Campeche and Yum Balam in Quintana Roo.
The conservation of the Caribbean flamingo is of utmost importance. These birds serve as indicators of the health of wetlands and coastal lagoons. These ecosystems play a vital role in storm protection and water purification. The preservation of these natural areas is not only ecologically significant but also economically beneficial, providing annual benefits estimated at nearly 30 million dollars.
