Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Municipal President José Luis Chacón and the Committee of the “Villa Cozumel” Ejido inaugurated the “Fiesta de la Santa Cruz y Feria del Cedral 2025” with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the “Los Mestizos” monument. The event continued with the crowning of the festival queen, the most beautiful flower, the godmother, and the queen of the horseback riders.

“With deep pride and respect for our roots, today we inaugurate the Cedral festivities, a living tradition that honors the Holy Cross. On this 177th anniversary, we remember the arrival of the first families to El Cedral, the first human settlement in Cozumel, which marked the beginning of a new era. We celebrate our heritage with activities that honor devotion, culture, and the joy of our people. I invite everyone to enjoy this celebration with their families, with concerts, fairs, delicious food, and, above all, togetherness. May the spirit of El Cedral continue to be a beacon of identity, faith, and tradition for present and future generations,” Chacón stated.

Coronation Ceremony and Festivities

Accompanied by his wife, Diana Sosa Blanco, honorary president of the DIF Cozumel system, Chacón joined Martín Cárdenas Ávila, substitute baton holder representing Eligio Cárdenas, the senior baton holder of El Cedral; Óscar Pinto Silva, president of the “Villa Cozumel” Ejido Committee; Javier Ovidio Vázquez López, fifth councilor and president of the entertainment commission; Alejandro Mattar Pérez, first councilor and secretary of the tourism commission; and Raymundo López Martínez, chief officer of the Cozumel City Council and general coordinator of the 2025 Cedral festivities. The group proceeded to the main palapa for the formal crowning of the festival queens.

Amid an atmosphere of excitement and joy, Regina Minerva López Palma was crowned Queen of El Cedral 2025, Marbella Marrufo Góngora as Godmother of El Cedral 2025, and Najla Sleme Zetnia as the Most Beautiful Flower of El Cedral 2025.

Óscar Pinto Silva delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of this cherished tradition. Martín Cárdenas Ávila expressed pride in keeping the festival alive.

Cultural Celebrations and Community Participation

Cozumel families gathered at the main palapa of the ejido village on Sunday morning to witness and partake in the cultural and traditional activities. Many women wore the vibrant and colorful traditional attire, the terno, showcasing the craftsmanship of Mayan artisans.

The festivities mark the most significant celebration in El Cedral, blending religious devotion with cultural heritage. Concerts, fairs, and communal gatherings will continue throughout the event, reinforcing the community’s shared identity.
