Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Chess players from the Peón Coronado Chess Club in Playa del Carmen delivered an outstanding performance at the 70th Mexican Open Chess Championship “Querétaro 2025,” solidifying their status as rising stars in the intellectual sport at the national level.
Sub-16 Runner-Up and Sub-8 Breakthrough
Wilberth Sebastián López Fuentes secured the title of National Runner-Up in the Sub-16 Absolute Category after winning six of his seven matches. This marks Sebastián’s second national runner-up finish in 2025, further confirming his consistency and skill.
The first-place title went to Miguel Carrillo of Veracruz, who scored 6.5 points, while Miguel Mendoza of Sinaloa also finished with six points but was surpassed by Sebastián in tiebreaker criteria.
In the Sub-8 Absolute Category, Ricardo Camorlinga Álvarez made history by clinching eighth place, earning five victories and two draws across seven matches. This marks Ricardo’s first appearance in the national top 10, signaling a promising future for the young player.

The achievements of Sebastián and Ricardo highlight the dedication and high-level training provided by the Peón Coronado Chess Club, as well as the growing prominence of chess in Playa del Carmen.
