Chetumal’s Iconic Savanah Receives Municipal Protection

The savannah at the entrance of Chetumal city is set to be declared a municipally protected natural area. This move is being spearheaded by Francisco Javier Pérez Navarrete, the Director of Environment and Ecology of the Othón P. Blanco municipality. The primary aim is to safeguard the savannah from pollution problems and the damaging effects of water lettuce, an issue that was first identified in 2018.

The declaration is not only expected to protect the savannah but also enhance its value. The protected area will include a 20-meter perimeter around the savannah, ensuring a comprehensive approach to its preservation.

While municipalities have the authority to declare urban parks as protected natural areas, this would be a first for the state. There is no record of similar actions being taken in Quintana Roo, making the Chetumal savannah a pioneer in local environmental protection initiatives.
