The Chichén Itzá airport, situated in the Kaua municipality, is set to rival the airports of Tulum and Cancún by 2025. This will be made possible with the anticipated arrival of the first two commercial airlines, a development revealed by the airport's director, José Miguel García Vales.
At present, Chichén Itzá airport only caters to private flights, welcoming tourists from Quintana Roo and other parts of Mexico. The airport sees approximately 1,000 passengers a year. It offers direct access to the Mundo Maya and the Riviera Maya, making it a strategic hub for both commerce and tourism, as noted by businessman Jordy Abraham Martínez.
The airport's management is actively seeking to establish connections and partnerships with tourism promoters and airlines from Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States.
The airport boasts a prime location, being a mere 10 minutes from the Chichén Itzá archaeological zone, 28 minutes from Valladolid, an hour from Izamal, 1.5 hours from Mérida, and two hours from the port of Progreso. It's also less than two hours from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, and 2.5 hours from Cozumel.
The Chichén Itzá airport enjoys the backing of Sefoet and Sefotur, business chambers from the eastern region like Coparmex and Canaco, and the operating company Servicios Aéreos Ciclo, a consortium led by José Antonio Loret de Mola Gómory.
In related news, Tulum International Airport celebrated its first anniversary by surpassing all expectations. It has become the second busiest airport in Quintana Roo, having served over 1,074,000 passengers and facilitated 8,500 air operations. “The International Air Transport Association projected that we would receive 700,000 passengers in this first year; however, we have far exceeded this goal, and we still have a month to close the year!”, Governor María Lezama stated.
