Following the New Year's celebrations, a serene atmosphere enveloped the Yucatan Peninsula as residents and tourists alike eagerly awaited the first sunrise of the year in Tulum. As the sun rose at 7:14 in the morning, hundreds of families gathered on the idyllic beaches to welcome the new year. This peaceful scene was a stark contrast to the turmoil Tulum experienced in 2023, when the city was embroiled in a brutal conflict between criminal gangs. The frequent reports of violence marred the city's reputation and threatened its primary economic engine: tourism.
By October 2024, the situation began to improve thanks to the implementation of the "Tulum Shield" program, an initiative led by local government leader Diego Castañón Trejo. This comprehensive plan involved the deployment of armed forces, municipal and state police, and National Guard members throughout the city and its beaches. The aim was to eliminate high-impact crimes that not only jeopardized the safety of residents but also threatened the steady flow of tourists to one of the world's most visited destinations.
The program saw significant success. By the end of 2024, both the crime rate and the number of tourists visiting Tulum had noticeably improved. However, allegations of corruption and extortion against police officers have somewhat tainted the program's success.
Despite these setbacks, the city's commerce, hospitality, and service sectors saw a significant rebound. While these achievements are noteworthy, they are not a reason for complacency. To sustain these improvements, challenges such as law enforcement training need to be addressed, particularly given the ongoing allegations of corruption and extortion.
The new year presents an opportunity to further secure Tulum and transform it into a destination associated not only with beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife but also with safety and stability. This ambitious goal is achievable with political will, citizen cooperation, and the adoption of effective international practices. With these elements, Tulum has the potential to become a successful model of security and sustainable tourism.
