The town of Cobá has secured an investment of $15 million pesos for the restoration of one of its main tourist attractions. The first phase of the lagoon walkway's reconstruction has been completed, featuring new lighting.
Last week, the Cobá lagoon, situated within the municipality of Tulum, celebrated the restoration of its once-popular walkway. This attraction had been demolished and abandoned years ago due to conflicts between local land communities and federal authorities.
Santos Hipólito Tuz, the Director of Public Works Monitoring in Tulum, clarified that the funding for the reconstruction was sourced from two areas. $10.5 million pesos were allocated from federal resources assigned to the Municipality, and $4.5 million pesos were provided by the Right of Use of Archaeological Zones (DUZA) program.
Tuz stated that this reconstruction project is only the first stage. It is anticipated that the necessary remaining funds will be available for a second phase by the end of the year.
"The first stage of the work is already 100 percent completed. The total investment was 15 million pesos, with 4.5 million coming from the DUZA program. The walkway is now operational, and we hope to commence a second stage this year with resources from DUZA to continue with the walkway," he said.
