Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ), under the leadership of President Jacobo Arzate Hop, has conducted its first-ever free training and certification program for judges in the popular sports disciplines of Martial Arts and Boxing. The initiative, endorsed by the National Coordination of the National Popular Games (JNP), aims to equip local judges with the skills needed to represent the state in national competitions.

Strengthening Sports Officiating in Quintana Roo

A total of 64 aspiring judges participated in the program—32 in martial arts and 32 in boxing. The two-day course, held at Cancún’s Parque Los Gemelos in Super Manzana 227, included theoretical instruction followed by practical application. The training was led by Raúl Domenzain Rosario, National Coordinator for Martial Arts, and Carlos “Bondojo” Hernández Velázquez, National Coordinator for Boxing.

Jacobo Arzate emphasized the importance of providing necessary tools to those involved in Quintana Roo’s sports sector. “In Quintana Roo, we also reinforce knowledge because it is essential to have updated judges and coaches,” he stated. “This certification, carried out in collaboration with the JNP National Coordination, was free of charge. CODEQ will continue working to implement such initiatives in the future.”

The newly certified judges will be eligible to officiate at national-level events, including the upcoming State Elimination Tournament for the 2025 National Popular Games.

Concurrent Open Tournament Showcases Local Talent

Alongside the certification program, Parque Los Gemelos hosted the inaugural Open Tournament of Popular Sports, featuring approximately 80 athletes competing in martial arts and boxing. The event served as preparation for participants aiming to qualify for the National Popular Games.

This initiative aligns with the New Agreement for Well-Being and Development, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, which emphasizes grassroots sports development and professional training.
