Several civil groups have voiced their concerns over the escalating issue of elderly neglect in Quintana Roo. This problem significantly impacts the quality of life for this vulnerable population. Lizbeth Santoyo Hernandez, president of the Orgullo Ciudadano Association, highlights that despite Quintana Roo being one of the youngest states in the country, it is home to approximately 123,000 elderly individuals. Many of these senior citizens do not receive the necessary care or attention. She attributes 80% of these neglect cases to the fact that the children of these elderly individuals have to work, often at great distances, leaving them with little time to provide care.
Hernandez describes the situation as alarming due to the increasing number of elderly people in Quintana Roo, with 56,000 residing in Benito Juarez alone. She points out the lack of resources for the elderly, including the absence of a geriatric hospital and a scarcity of specialists. "It's a complex situation," she stated. She further noted that despite efforts from various organizations and the government, the resources and support provided are still insufficient to meet the needs of the elderly population.
Hernandez acknowledged that both federal and local governments have attempted to improve the quality of life for the elderly. However, she emphasized that the number of elderly individuals far outweighs the capacity of available organizations and governmental resources. Despite these challenges, she noted a recent increase in societal empathy towards the elderly. This shift has led to more businesses and schools offering job opportunities or spaces for the elderly.
In light of the upcoming holiday season, Hernandez urged the public to donate groceries. The association plans to deliver 150 dinners to elderly individuals during Christmas to ensure no one goes without a meal. The Orgullo Ciudadano Association is located at 1620A Circuito Ixtafiayuca Street, in the Hacienda Real del Caribe neighborhood. They can be reached at the following numbers: 998-3056-139 and 998-3064-076.
