Coco Bay Hotel Construction Resumes Despite Area Closure
The Coco Bay Hotel in Playa del Carmen has resumed construction despite the area being officially closed by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). The hotel has been reported for using heavy machinery in the closed area, causing damage to the local mangrove zone.
Gabriel Mendicuti Loría, Twelfth Councilman and head of the Environment Commission, has announced that an investigation will be launched into the hotel's activities. This announcement comes in the wake of last week's Earth Day celebrations, during which the local community reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and began gathering signatures to present to authorities.
Mendicuti Loría emphasized the importance of public complaints and pledged to thoroughly investigate the situation. He also addressed a community request to transform the hotel site into an ecological park. This proposal was initially presented by the Municipal Environment Commission, which recommended maintaining a zero-density policy to prevent further construction in the area.
With the impending dissolution of the Commission, it's been suggested that the nearly 40 hectares of land be allocated to the proposed park. The site is currently being used for cultural activities.
