The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) is continuing its efforts to maintain coral reefs in the Chankanaab Natural Park. This initiative is part of the Reef Restoration Program, which has been successful in revitalizing the coral ecosystem. The FPMC's General Director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, emphasized the crucial role of community involvement in reef preservation.
The FPMC's restoration program includes regular monitoring and maintenance of the corals to ensure their optimal growth. As part of this initiative, young volunteers are actively involved in cleaning the corals, removing algae and waste that could hinder their development.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, the Director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), underscored that these activities not only safeguard the reefs, but also foster a culture of respect and care for nature within the local community. Every Tuesday, volunteers are guided by marine biologist Ezequiel Castillo and natural resources handler Antonio Chale in cleaning the coral colonies, a crucial task for their healthy growth.
Rafael Chacón explained, "By carefully removing waste and attached algae with a brush, we enable the corals to grow unimpeded, increasing their survival rate." This collaborative effort between the FPMC and volunteers strengthens environmental awareness and promotes the restoration of the marine ecosystem, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
