Pablo Aguilar Torres, a representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ) in Cozumel, has announced plans to extend the hours for night diving on the island. The goal is to establish the location as a premier destination for this activity.
The decision was made after considering the timing of departures, arrivals, and the completion of diving activities. The safety of marinas and the protection of reefs were also key factors in this decision. The move is intended to help Cozumel compete with other Caribbean destinations, where there are fewer restrictions on night diving.
A permit from the Port Authority is needed to extend the diving hours. The authority is primarily concerned with ensuring the safety of tourists.
Torres also mentioned that the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) has been reviewing the rules that govern the management plan for the past two years. There are new proposals from Conanp that are currently under consideration. Meanwhile, the council is focused on promoting tourism, while also prioritizing the protection of the reefs.
Torres acknowledged that September and October are typically the most challenging months for hotel occupancy. However, he expressed hope that the end of the low season, coupled with the sports events scheduled on the island, will boost accommodation rates, which currently stand at 40%.
He stated that the past year had seen record-breaking tourism figures, and the goal is to work with the next administration to maintain these numbers.
