The Department of Education of the Cozumel City Council has initiated a project to create a Time Capsule. The capsule will be sealed in 2024 and reopened in 2049, coinciding with the bicentennial celebration of the founding of San Miguel de Cozumel. The project aims to capture the spirit of the island and offer future generations a snapshot of contemporary life.
Saturnino Magaña Valle, Deputy Director of Education, detailed that the capsule will contain a variety of items, photographs, and documents that encapsulate life in Cozumel in the present year. Cozumel residents are encouraged to contribute items such as non-functional tablets, magazines, books, newspaper clippings, and other symbolic pieces. For the sake of preservation, it is suggested that documents be laminated and printed.
Veudi Vivas Valdés, a lifelong historian of the island, stated that the capsule will be unsealed in 2049, marking the 200th anniversary of San Miguel de Cozumel's establishment. To ensure the safekeeping of the capsule's contents, the City Council team is taking special precautions in choosing the container for the items.
Contributions can be made at the Municipal Library from 8:00 to 20:00 hours, up until November 15. The sealing of the capsule will take place on November 22 at Quintana Roo Park.
