Cozumel, known as a "City of Birds", recently commemorated World Migratory Bird Day. The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) hosted a birdwatching event at Punta Sur Ecotourism Park. The event saw the participation of the local community and resulted in the recording of 22 bird species.
Families of all ages gathered at Punta Sur for the event. Both experienced birdwatchers and newcomers alike enjoyed the activity, supported by equipment supplied by the FPMC's Department of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA) and the park.
World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated twice a year, on the second Saturday of May and October. These dates align with two significant bird migrations to breeding areas like Punta Sur park. The park provides a suitable resting and feeding spot for the birds before they continue their journey. This underlines the environmental importance of preserving such natural areas to maintain biodiversity.
This year's theme, "Protect insects, protect birds", highlights the essential role insects play in the ecosystem. Migratory birds feed on insects, which provide the energy necessary for their remarkable journeys.
During the event, participants observed 22 bird species. These included the Least Tern (Sternula antillarum), Osprey (Pandion haliaetus ridgwayi), Anhinga or American Darter (Anhinga anhinga), Northern Waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis), and Cozumel Warbler (Setophaga petechia rufivertex).
Alejandro Marchán Payán, the general director of the FPMC, expressed gratitude to the participants of all ages. He emphasized the growing awareness of the importance of birds for environmental balance and overall well-being. The event not only nurtures an appreciation for nature but also strengthens the connection between the community and its natural surroundings.
