The Parks and Museums Foundation of Cozumel (FPMC) has teamed up with the Pedro and Elena Hernández Foundation A.C. to safeguard the Caribbean flamingo population in the Yucatan Peninsula. Their combined efforts are focused on preserving this species and revitalizing its habitat. This is achieved through partnerships with a variety of public and private organizations.

The Pedro and Elena Hernández Foundation has a history of working with groups like CONANP, UNAM, and the College of the Southern Frontier. Their joint efforts have been instrumental in monitoring and preserving the Caribbean flamingo populations in the Ría Lagartos lagoon system.

On Cozumel Island, the FPMC has made significant strides in bird monitoring efforts at the State Ecological Park Laguna Colombia, a sanctuary for the pink flamingo. An ongoing restoration project in the area has resulted in a resurgence of the aquatic avifauna, with a notable increase in the presence of pink flamingos.

The "Flamingo Lab" initiative, which includes the recording of pink flamingo ringings in Cozumel, provides invaluable data on the birds' distribution and migration patterns in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The FPMC has been proactive in involving the local community in this project. They emphasize the importance of collaboration between institutions and the crucial role the community plays in preserving iconic species like the Caribbean pink flamingo.
