The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) has announced a partnership with the Xcaret Group to prepare for the 17th annual Sacred Mayan Crossing, scheduled for May 16 and 17. This collaboration aims to promote cultural tourism and preserve local traditions.
The partnership aligns with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, an initiative by governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The agreement seeks to enhance cultural tourism as a key driver of economic and social development for the community's benefit.
The Sacred Mayan Crossing, orchestrated by the Xcaret Group, is a significant event that reenacts the ancient maritime pilgrimage of the Mayans. The journey begins from Pole (Xcaret) to Cuzamil (modern-day Cozumel), the sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel. Participants pay tribute to the goddess, partake in her rituals, and receive her divine message, which they then share with their communities in a festive and spiritual setting.
The FPMC director stated that the partnership would help coordinate activities for the event. The FPMC's role includes preserving these traditions, strengthening the island's cultural identity, and promoting cultural tourism. As part of this effort, the FPMC will work with the Xcaret Group to ensure that participants in the Sacred Mayan Crossing can easily access the Chankanaab Natural Park, managed by the FPMC, and return to the mainland the following day.
Both institutions are committed to honoring the Mayan legacy in this new edition of the event, offering the community and visitors a unique experience filled with history, devotion, and a connection to ancestral roots.
Notably, the meeting included representatives from the Xcaret Group, including Alejandro Medina, Director of Public Affairs; Sergio Esquinca, Manager of Institutional Relations; Daniel Bojórquez, Manager of Art and Culture Production and Operation; Kenhali Dávila, Manager of Cultural Promotion and Coordination of Sacred Mayan Crossing; and Rox Miranda, Head of Art and Culture Production.
