Cozumel Island remains the leading choice for cruise tourism in Mexico. Between January 1st and September 22nd of this year, the island welcomed 906 cruise ships, marking a 10.2% increase from the same period in 2023. This growth could have been even more significant if not for the adverse weather conditions caused by storms and hurricanes throughout 2024, as reported by the Comprehensive Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo).

The federal Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) ranks Cozumel and Mahahual, both located in Quintana Roo, as the top two cruise destinations in the country. They are followed by Ensenada in Baja California, with Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, and Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, taking the fourth and fifth spots.

In the first four months of 2024, Cozumel saw 520 cruise ship arrivals and hosted 1.81 million passengers. This represents a 14.2% increase in passenger numbers and a 5.5% increase in vessel arrivals compared to the same period in 2023.

Quintana Roo ended September with 78 cruises scheduled. Of these, 65 arrived and 13 were cancelled due to poor weather conditions and the impact of Hurricane Helene on the Mexican Caribbean. Despite these challenges, Cozumel Island experienced a surge in passenger numbers. The island saw an increase from approximately 2.94 million to 3.37 million cruise-goers, marking a 15.7% growth compared to the same period last year.
