In the early hours of Tuesday, crime reporter Silvia Peraza Azueta became the target of an armed attack at her home in Cozumel, Quintana Roo. This incident followed threats she received after publishing a report about the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).
Peraza, who is the founder of the website Código Rojo Quintana Roo, had recently posted on her social media about threats she received. These threats were linked to her report about neglect in patient care and a shortage of medication at an IMSS hospital in Cozumel. Following the threats, she filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo.
During a live broadcast outside the attorney's office, Peraza shared the phone number and read out the threatening messages she had received. These messages demanded that she remove a publication and accused her of accepting money from a company, allegations that she firmly denies.
Hours after the live broadcast, news of an attack on her home was reported on her news portal's Facebook page. The attack, which occurred around midnight, was followed by another post from Peraza: "I have already taken down the note about IMSS. This is what they asked me to do. I CLARIFY, I have NEVER received a single peso from organized crime, someone has charged or has been charging for me, someone has been given money, BUT NOT ME, I swear to GOD. They threatened me and my family, and we don't deserve it. The Lord is my shepherd, nothing will happen to me.”
Peraza has used her media platform to amplify the voices of the Cozumel population, highlighting citizen complaints and public institutional negligence. Following the attack on her home, authorities arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and initiated an investigation into the threats and armed attack against the journalist and her family.
