Cozumel recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, commemorating the Decree of Creation of the Town of San Miguel de Cozumel. A public ceremony was held in Benito Juarez Park, attended by the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, representatives of the three state powers, and descendants of the original 46 settlers recorded in the 1850 census. The city's chronicler, Veudi Vivas Valdés, read the founding decree and paid tribute to the settlers, praising their bravery and pioneering spirit.
José Luis Chacón Méndez, the municipal president, emphasized that the anniversary marks a new era of opportunities and challenges for Cozumel. He urged unity and collaboration to construct a future where everyone can thrive and live with dignity. He expressed his vision of a prosperous Cozumel built through collective effort.
Governor Mara Lezama acknowledged the historical contributions of the founders and praised the resilience and determination of the people of Cozumel. She noted that Cozumel has played a crucial role in the social and political evolution of the state over the past 175 years. The governor highlighted her administration's progress, centered on a model of shared prosperity. She cited the agreement with shipping companies to charge a $5 fee per passenger, both in Cozumel and Mahahual, a sum that will be matched by the state government. These funds will be allocated towards enhancing tourism infrastructure, natural disaster prevention, and security via the newly established Cruise Tourism Promotion Fund.
The governor clarified that these initiatives are not about taking resources away from the island, but rather increasing investments to address inequality and promote fair development. She emphasized the progress made in reducing inequality and improving conditions for all inhabitants. The ceremony concluded with the authorities presenting awards to the representatives of the settlers, reiterating their commitment to honor the island's history while striving for a more prosperous and equitable future for all its residents.
