Cozumel Island continues to hold its place as the top destination for cruise tourism in Mexico. Data from Quintana Roo's Integral Port Administration (Apiqroo) shows that between January 1 and September 22, 2024, the island welcomed 906 cruise ships. This represents a 10.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. However, this number could have been higher if not for the cancellations due to adverse weather conditions caused by storms and hurricanes.

Not only is Cozumel leading in cruise ship arrivals, but it has also seen a significant rise in passenger numbers. In the first four months of 2024, the island recorded 1.81 million passengers, marking a 14.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023. During this time, the island also received 520 cruises, a 5.5% increase from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Mahahual, also located in Quintana Roo, ranks second in the country for cruise ship arrivals. With 207 arrivals, it saw a 15.6% increase in the number of ships. The port also welcomed 844,087 passengers, a substantial 35.6% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023.

September proved to be a challenging month for Cozumel. Out of the 78 scheduled cruises, only 65 managed to arrive, with 13 cancellations due to weather conditions and the passage of Hurricane Helene through the Mexican Caribbean. Despite these setbacks, the island saw an increase in the total number of passengers, rising from 2.93 million in 2023 to 3.37 million in 2024, a growth of 15.7%.

Cozumel's success isn't limited to cruise ship arrivals. The island also excels in managing various Apiqroo business operations, such as cruises, routes, ferries, and nautical tourism. In 2024, the federal route connecting Cozumel with Playa del Carmen recorded 2.44 million passengers, while the route between Puerto Juarez and Isla Mujeres saw 3.92 million passengers.

In spite of weather-related challenges, Cozumel continues to be a benchmark for cruise tourism in Mexico. Given its ability to adapt to market changes and climate conditions, it's likely that the island will remain a favorite port of call for tourists seeking to experience the allure of the Mexican Caribbean.
