The mototaxi guild on the island of Cozumel is in turmoil following the arrival of seven new mototaxis. The guild members are concerned that these new additions will introduce unfair competition. The new vehicles, which arrived on a ferry late Sunday night, were met with resistance from local transporters, who attempted to block their entry as a sign of protest.
The escalating conflict prompted intervention from the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) and Public Security. Former councilor Pedro Centeno Ku, known for his suspension from duties due to Political Violence Against Women against the current mayor, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, also appeared on the scene.
Centeno Ku informed the authorities that he was advising the new mototaxis and had received prior authorization from the delegate of Imoveqroo, Anuar Garcia. He argued that the seizure of the new vehicles was unlawful. Despite his claims, the seven mototaxis were placed under the protection of the military garrison in the yards of the Quintana Roo Integral Port Administration (Apiqroo).
There are unconfirmed reports suggesting that an additional 33 units will arrive in Cozumel, bringing the total to 40.
