In an effort to bolster citizen security, the Cozumel Municipal Government and the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), in collaboration with the Military Garrison, have launched the Firearm Exchange Module 2025. The module, which began operation this Monday, is located on the ground floor of the Municipal Palace and will be open from April 7 to 11, between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.
The goal of the exchange program is to remove weapons from circulation without legal repercussions for those who surrender them. In return, an immediate financial incentive is offered, the amount of which depends on the type and caliber of the weapon surrendered.
Margarita Vázquez Barrios, the general secretary of the Municipality, representing municipal president Juanita Chacón, emphasized that this initiative is a testament to the government's dedication to creating a safer environment for Cozumel families. She stated, "We are working closely with all levels of government and various sectors to transform Cozumel into a safer island. Our collaboration with the armed forces is a clear example of this commitment."
The module accepts a variety of items, including short and long weapons, cartridges, ammunition, explosives, and any other devices deemed for exclusive military use. Those interested in participating are encouraged to visit the module in person, complete a straightforward form, and hand in their weapon. No personal information will be requested, and no investigations will be initiated. The primary objective is to reduce the risks associated with civilian weapon possession.
