“Massive Blue Crab Migration Surges in Cozumel Breeding Season”

The Cozumel City Council's Deputy Director of Ecology, Germán Yáñez, recently reported a significant increase in the migration of blue crabs in Solidaridad County. This mass migration, linked to the crabs' breeding season, is a phenomenon that hasn't been observed in over a decade.

Yáñez has urged Cozumel residents to exercise caution while driving, as the crabs frequently cross roads during their journey from the sea to the wetlands. Many crabs are unfortunately run over by vehicles during this migration.

While the blue crab is not a legally protected species, Yáñez stressed the importance of considering their current reproductive phase. "We are responsible for their care," he stated. "And by 'we', I mean not only the government but society as a whole."

The blue crab's reproductive season began in May, but the recent increase in migration has led to a heightened focus on the protection of the species. Numerous crabs have been spotted in trees, on curbs, in green spaces, and on streets, indicating a significant increase in their movement.
