The 11th annual Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) was held with great success on the island of Cozumel, further establishing it as a leading destination for international sports events. The event was overseen by Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez and attracted competitors from over 30 countries. The economic impact of the event exceeded six million dollars, underscoring the positive influence of sports tourism on the local economy.
The male category was won by Uriel Omar Espinosa López, Flavio de Luna took second place and Salvador Lemus Guerrero came third. In the women's category, Milena Salcedo took first place, followed by Melissa Vargas and Sara Roel López.
The GFNY Cozumel was broadcasted globally via the WHIP LIVE (GFNY Live) app, enabling real-time tracking of competitors. This global reach emphasizes the event's significance, attracting both national and international tourists each year and reinforcing Cozumel's reputation as a world-class sports destination.
The competition comprised of 80 and 160 kilometer cycling routes around the island, offering participants the chance to appreciate the natural beauty of Cozumel and its stunning turquoise waters. The award ceremony was officiated by Margarita del Rosario Vázquez Barrios, Secretary General of the City Council, Andrés Aguilar Becerril, the Undersecretary of State Tourism, and Vice Admiral Jesús Pineda.
In a special awards presentation, the participation of children in the GFNY Kids was acknowledged, with medals and trophies awarded for their efforts. Events like the GFNY help to solidify Cozumel's reputation as the "Sports Island", enhancing tourism and fostering a culture of international-level sports.
