Scores of taxi drivers in Cozumel have voiced their concerns over the presence of approximately 400 motor-taxis operating unlawfully on the island. The drivers held a protest demanding stricter enforcement of transportation laws and regulations in Cozumel.

The taxi drivers claim that these motor-taxis are operating without the necessary permits, licenses, or registration plates. They argue that these motor-taxis are functioning without any restrictions or regulations.

Representatives of the motor-taxi groups on the island have pointed out that the nearly 400 motor-taxis have been registered in a census to prevent an influx of additional operators.

However, the taxi drivers have expressed their dissatisfaction, noting that the authorities are not taking action against these motor-taxis operating without proper documentation. Meanwhile, they, as licensed operators, are frequently subjected to police scrutiny.

The taxi drivers are calling for a more orderly and regulated transportation system on the island. They also criticize the apparent impunity with which the motor-taxis are allowed to operate.
