Cozumel, a beautiful island off the eastern coast of Mexico, has reported the first sea turtle nest of 2024, marking the commencement of the Protection and Conservation Program for the year. The nest was discovered at a camp along the island's coastline, a key area for sea turtle nesting.
Early Monday morning, staff from the ecology sub-directorate of the San Martin camp discovered the nest, along with the trail left by the sea turtle. Experts have identified the eggs as belonging to the Caretta caretta species, also known as the "loggerhead" turtle. This species' arrival is a regular occurrence on the island's eastern coast.
The discovery of this nest officially kicks off the 2024 Cozumel Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program. This important initiative involves daily patrols along the coastline, with teams looking out for turtles or signs of their presence.
When a nest is located, a red stake is placed to mark the spot. This stake carries important information such as the name of the beach, the date, the team that found it, the species, and the nest number. A clear message is also attached, urging people not to remove or touch the stakes, or to dig in the area, as this could endanger the turtles.
