“Cozumel’s New Tourist Recycling Initiative: Clean Streets Ahead!”

Cozumel, a popular tourist destination, is taking steps to keep its streets cleaner and safer. The Public Services Department has started the installation of 50 new recycling containers in the main tourist area. The initiative is designed to reduce littering in public spaces and make waste disposal more convenient for pedestrians. The majority of these containers will be positioned in the Centro neighborhood, particularly in areas with high foot traffic, such as the streets around Rafael E. Melgar Avenue and public parks.

The placement of the containers was strategically planned. A survey of the area was carried out to identify spots with the highest concentration of people at specific times. This was done without obstructing the view of the tourist area or disrupting the natural activities of the location.

In Benito Juárez park alone, 11 recycling containers have been installed. Five are inside the park, one at the north entrance, one at the south entrance, two in Plaza del Sol, one in the parking lot, and another next to the San Miguel church. Old containers have been removed and relocated to other parts of the city.

More containers are being placed on the streets adjacent to Rafael E. Melgar Avenue. In the northern area, they have been installed on 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th streets, while in the southern part they have been placed on Adolfo Rosado Salas, and 3rd, 5th, and 7th streets, as well as in Quintana Roo park. Containers are also being installed on 10th Avenue and other points in the tourist zone.

These containers are made from weather-resistant materials and have five compartments for separating waste: organic, paper, plastics, metal, and glass. They were purchased through a bidding process by the Ecology Sub-directorate, using funds from the "Environmental Sanitation Right (DSA)".
