The Carnival Breeze cruise ship docked in Progreso yesterday, carrying 6,023 individuals, including 4,666 passengers and 1,357 crew members. The ship's arrival was one of the busiest for the port, as per the official schedule of the National Port System Administration (Asipona). The ship arrived at 7:33 AM after a day in Cozumel and departed at 4 PM for Galveston.
In contrast to previous days, over 500 passengers chose to spend their time on the beach, while between 200 and 300 explored the city's downtown area. They visited various shops, craft stalls, restaurants, and the local market, purchasing a range of products.
The influx of tourists proved to be beneficial for local businesses along the beach. Visitors purchased souvenirs, toys, lifejackets, sunglasses, bracelets, as well as food and drinks. Many also availed services such as banana boat rides, massages, and rented beach furniture.
A local worker who rents out beach huts commented, "Today is a good day. It's not as busy as when the beach is full, but people are here and they are spending money. When other ships dock, passengers seldom spend much, leaving many of us workers without earnings. But today is good, there is profit for everyone."
Street vendors also reported a steady business day. Vendors selling cold items, such as snow cones and chilled coconuts, saw the most sales, as tourists sought to cool down from the 33-degree Celsius heat. With clear skies and intense sunshine, many visitors also took the opportunity to cool off in the sea.
