Exciting Highlights from Cuna del Mestizaje 2024 Cycling Race

The third edition of the "Cuna del Mestizaje 2024" Cycling Race was a success, promoting camaraderie and sportsmanship among its 127 participants. The event took place on the Boulevard Bahía de Chetumal and was supported by the Quintana Roo Sports Committee (CODEQ). The committee, led by Jacobo Arzate Hop, is committed to promoting sports as a tool for social unity, a goal set by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The race took place on a 5-kilometer circuit, starting from the Fiscal Dock and ending at the Dos Mulas resort. There were two routes available, one consisting of 3 laps and the other 5 laps, designed for beginners in both women's and men's categories. The highlight of the day was the “Elite” category, which ran 13 laps. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the Beginners, Open, Masters A and B, Juveniles, and Elite categories at the end of the race.

The event was organized by María José Mezquita and Heberth Can Murillo, the CODEQ Planning Director. Participants hailed from teams in Yucatan, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Chetumal, and even the Santinos team from Belize, as well as local competitors.

In the Elite category, Alan Carrillo Avilez from the Cozumel-based team Freedom Multisport won the championship title for the second year in a row. The former National Olympics medalist completed the 13-lap course in 2 hours, 38 minutes. José González and Donizzete Vázquez, both from the Zorros de Yucatán Club, came in second and third respectively.

In the Open category, Constanza Flores Monje from the Quintana Roo Selection emerged as the winner. Patricia Poot Pech from the Xilbalbikers team and French rider Ellen Knuvers of Elite Cyclery came in second and third respectively.

In the 8-lap Juvenile race, Francisco Hernández Pérez from the Skyteam Cycling Club claimed first place, followed by Aiton Esquivel and Armando León. In the Masters A category, José Cardozo from the Santinos club won, and in the Masters B, Carlos Gutiérrez from the Chikin Ha club took the victory.
