Recent heavy rainfall has led to a resurgence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a known carrier of dengue, in Quintana Roo. The increase in rainfall has resulted in overgrown vegetation and waterlogged areas throughout the state's cities, creating ideal breeding grounds for these mosquitoes.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, there were 927 confirmed cases of dengue in the state up until mid-October this year. A significant rise in cases was observed in the last two weeks, which health authorities attribute to the recent rains.

Despite the increase, the number of cases is significantly lower than the 3,376 cases recorded in the first nine months of 2023. This decrease is attributed to intensive fogging campaigns and the control of areas identified as hotspots for the disease.

Efforts to remove rubble and verify properties have also contributed to reducing the mosquito population. The Dengue Epidemiological Overview report reveals that Quintana Roo is among the eight states with the fewest cases of the disease, with the national average being around 2,409 confirmed cases.

The Othón P. Blanco Municipal Council has confirmed that they are conducting cleaning campaigns in parks and reserves, despite the rainfall. These efforts aim to prevent overgrown vegetation from becoming a problem for the community.

The public is also being encouraged to maintain clean yards and take advantage of dry periods to remove potential mosquito breeding sites, such as tires, dishes, and buckets.

Statewide directives have been issued to all vector control personnel to combat the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. While the number of cases has decreased, the disease continues to be a concern, albeit with no fatal cases reported.
