Nohamy Hermida Nieves, director of the Sexual Diversity department in the Benito Juárez municipality, has revealed that winners of the “Drag Catrínate” contest will feature at a stand during the Day of the Dead celebrations. This initiative is part of the department's involvement in the festivities.
The stand will be set up at the Mexico vs Colombia “influencers” meetup, which is scheduled to take place at the Andrés Quintana Roo Stadium on Saturday, November 2nd at 9:00 PM. The event will also include a game and fair, with various Community Development Centers participating with exhibition altars.
The stand will be themed around the Day of the Dead, and the top two winners of the “Drag Catrínate” contest will be present. The aim is to not only promote the tradition, but also to showcase the fusion of drag art with Mexican traditions.
Winners and participants of the contest are also invited to take part in the Hanal Pixán activities, where the department will have a presence. This could be in the parade of catrinas or other spaces assigned to them.
The “Drag Catrínate” contest was held last weekend at Las Palapas Park, attracting an estimated 750 attendees over two days. This number could be higher due to park visitors who watched part of the contest without registering.
Nieves described the event as a "resounding success", particularly for the attendees. She stressed the importance of demonstrating that traditions and culture are not gender-specific. She also highlighted the participation of an inclusion group of people with disabilities, who she said "really stole the show".
In this first edition of the contest, prizes were awarded to the top three places: 5 thousand pesos for the first place, 3 thousand for the second and 2 thousand for the third. These prizes were awarded in recognition of the effort put into their characterization, including makeup and costumes.
