Driver Falls Asleep, Smashes into Power Poles on Tulum Highway

A damaged red car with a crumpled hood and shattered windshield at night, with two men inspecting the damage on a dark road.

A van was destroyed and two power poles were knocked down in an accident on the Playa del Carmen-Tulum highway, near Paamul. The incident took place around 1 a.m., as a Ford Explorer was traveling southbound.

According to the official report, the driver fell asleep at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into two power poles owned by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The impact was so strong that both poles were knocked down, blocking the right lane of the highway.

Remarkably, the driver was unharmed and left the accident scene. When authorities arrived, they found the abandoned vehicle and arranged for a tow truck to remove it from the road.

Finally, CFE workers arrived to disconnect the electricity and start the process of repairing the damaged poles.
