On December 21, 2024, Solidaridad's municipal president, Estefanía Mercado, welcomed Eduardo Nájera, a former Mexican professional basketball player, to Playa del Carmen. Nájera, a veteran of NBA teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, was in town to host the NBA Playa del Carmen Camp for 100 local children and teenagers at the Poliforum.
Alberto López, the director of the Sports Institute, joined Mercado in presenting an award to Nájera. They celebrated his inspiring career and his role as a sports ambassador, embodying the values of hard work, discipline, and talent. Mercado praised Nájera for showing that dreams have no limits when pursued with passion, from his humble beginnings in Mexico to his success in the NBA.
Mercado further commended Nájera for upholding Mexican values and demonstrating that perseverance and humility are the keys to success. She thanked him for his empathy towards the children, saying, "You are an inspiration for them and a crucial part of developing a community that invests in the talent of its younger generations."
She also revealed that Playa del Carmen will host major international sporting events in 2025, with a particular emphasis on basketball and nurturing young talent. Mercado expressed her desire for the city to become a leading destination in the sports and tourism sector. She believes that Nájera's example can inspire the community to embrace this vision.
These events will not only raise Playa del Carmen's global sports profile but will also benefit local families, businesses, and the broader community. Most importantly, they will encourage young people to dream big and believe in their potential to reach the highest levels of success.
Also in attendance at the event were the Secretaries of Tourism and Economic Development and Investment Attraction, Estefanía Hernández and Antón Bojórquez, respectively, along with local representative Euterpe Gutiérrez, among other guests.
