The importance of educating tourists visiting Yucatan to promote sustainable practices was recently emphasized at a forum. Esmeralda Ríos Cárdenas, the Deputy Director of Economic Development and Tourism in Mérida, stressed the need for implementing measures and raising awareness about sustainability among visitors.
The discussion took place during the Third Forum of Sustainability, Industry and Tourism, held recently at the Cultural Center of Mérida Olimpo. At the conference titled "Female Vision in Sustainability," Cárdenas highlighted the importance of respecting local customs and practices. She stated, "Negotiation is not permitted here, nor is disposing of paper in the toilet. We need actions that encourage tourists to commit to sustainability."
Cárdenas also mentioned projects established in local communities, such as meliponaries – beekeeping initiatives. She noted, "Women have opened their meliponaries to the public, selling the products they produce. This not only contributes to their families but also benefits their communities."
Rosa García Pantoja, a tourism consultant and analyst in Mérida, argued that not all land should be developed for tourism. She questioned, "If real estate developments continue to expand, how much land will be left for cultivation?"
