Don’t Miss: Christmas Bonuses Deadline for Employers

The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare in Quintana Roo is set to launch a verification operation from December 21. The operation aims to ensure that employers fulfill their legal obligation to pay Christmas bonuses before December 20. The bonus, a fundamental workers' right, is equivalent to 15 days of wages.

Verónica Salinas, Head of the Department, and José Francisco Trujillo, Undersecretary of Labor, emphasized the importance of this right. The operation will cover 22,700 companies registered with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). These companies employ 530,000 workers across the state. The primary goal is to ensure that these companies deliver the bonuses promptly.

Trujillo added that random inspections will be conducted in 700 companies from December 21 until March of the following year. The operation will also address direct complaints from workers who do not receive their Christmas bonus on time.

Penalties for non-compliance vary between 50 and 50,000 UMAS (Units of Measurement and Updating), depending on the severity of the case and the evidence provided by both the employer and the worker. Last year, the Secretariat received 70 complaints, most of which were resolved in favor of the workers. This resulted in the recovery of 230 million pesos, primarily in the hotel, tourism, and related industries.

The department encourages employees to file a formal complaint if they do not receive their Christmas bonus. They also urge employers to fulfill this obligation promptly to avoid penalties.
