The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and its subsidiary, Maya Train, are set to issue a contract for the supervision and identification of environmental concerns across the seven sections of the major railway project. This is expected to run throughout 2025.

Sedena and Maya Train have initiated a public tender to hire an environmental education service. The goal is to educate the 1,500 workers at the 52 stations about environmental care, conservation of natural resources in the Maya Jungle, and how to contribute to the sustainable operation of the train. This is also in line with compliance with environmental impact authorizations.

The environmental education program will cover a range of topics. These include water resource management, description and conservation of native fauna and flora species, identification of dangerous or risk-prone wildlife for workers, and preservation of ecosystems near the project. Other sustainability and ecology topics will also be covered.

The environmental education program will be delivered by personnel with proven experience in environmental education. This could include engineers, biologists, science or education graduates. The program will run throughout 2025, with 20 hours of classes spread over five days.

The winning bidder will be responsible for designing and developing the program's content. Topics will include control and management of urban solid waste, special and hazardous management, introduction to the concept of circular economy, biodiversity and environmental services, and control of atmospheric emissions.

In summary, the training aims to raise awareness among the Maya Train staff about the importance of caring for the environment and local ecosystems. It will also ensure compliance with environmental requirements to guarantee a sustainable operation of the project.
