The Solidaridad Government has recently established the Council for the Promotion of Nutrition and Combat of Overweight, Obesity, Eating Disorders and Prevention of Diseases such as Diabetes. The inaugural session of this Council was headed by Luis Herrera, the general secretary of the Municipal Council.
Dr. Miriam Analy Organista, director of Physical and Mental Health, explained the Council's objective. It aims to encourage nutritional education, develop and assess health policies focused on nutrition, and promote healthy and affordable eating for all.
She further elaborated that the Council will operate through the formation of subcommittees, each focusing on specific areas. These include health promotion through education and information campaigns, nutrition and workplace health, nutrition in relation to sports and physical activity, and nutrition and social assistance.
Dr. Organista also announced that the Council will hold its second session in July, followed by the third in November.
In addition to the Council, the City Council, through the Health Secretariat and the Directorate of Physical and Mental Health, operates five health units offering nutrition services. These units, located in 28 de Julio, Puerto Aventuras, Petén, Villas del Sol and Colosio, are open from Monday to Friday during the morning shift.
Dr. Organista highlighted the high prevalence of nutrition-related diseases in the municipality of Solidaridad, with obesity being the most common. According to data from the federal Health Secretariat, an estimated 2,254 people in the region are affected by this condition.
She emphasized that the main challenges include a lack of nutritional education among the population, limited access to healthy food, resistance to changing eating habits, and the financial sustainability of families to maintain their nutritional needs.
