Mexico Boosts Tourism with Expanded Air Travel Quotas to Europe

Over the past decade, Mexico's tourism industry has become increasingly reliant on the United States market. The percentage of foreign visitors arriving by air from the US has risen by eight percentage points, from 55.3% in 2014 to 63.4% last year. This data is according to the Migration Policy Unit (UPM) of the Ministry of the Interior.

In 2024, Mexico welcomed 22,299,383 foreign visitors, marking a 2% increase from the previous year. This growth rate was the smallest since the significant 58.3% drop in 2020, which was a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic. As other European and Asian destinations began to fully reopen, the convenience of Mexico's beach destinations led to a significant 72.7% contribution from American tourists to the country's tourism recovery in 2021.
