The European Union (EU) is supporting initiatives to use sargassum as a raw material in the textile industry. This is part of the EU's Global Gateway project, which aims to reduce the impact of sargassum in the Dominican Republic and other affected regions.
Jutta Urpilainen, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, has highlighted how sargassum, a significant issue in these areas, can be transformed into an economic opportunity. The EU is currently in discussions with governments and private companies to support innovative initiatives that incorporate sargassum into their value chains.
However, the use of sargassum in the textile industry is just one potential application. The Global Gateway project also focuses on water and sanitation, digital development, and sustainable finance. These areas are set to receive considerable financial backing from the EU.
In July of the previous year, the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Summit took place in Brussels. During this summit, an additional funding package of 45 billion euros, equivalent to 48.6 billion dollars, was approved. This funding is earmarked for various investments throughout the Caribbean, particularly in the energy, environmental, and digital sectors.
Through the Global Gateway project, the EU and its member countries aim to collaborate with partner countries. The goal is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic development, combat the climate crisis, and advance digital development for the benefit of people. This strategy also aims to boost private investment in sectors critical to partner countries, while respecting environmental standards and human rights.
