Residents of the Villas Morelos subdivision, Phase 1, and Villas La Playa have publicly expressed their concern over the extensive deforestation of a large green space. The area in question is located on Joaquín Zetina Gasca Avenue, at its intersection with Tlacuache, in the northern part of the city. The residents argue that the developments lack a genuine sustainability plan, with all vegetation being removed without designating any green spaces within the proposed project.
The area, which is situated behind a popular supermarket and adjacent to the Cancun-Puerto Morelos highway, has witnessed the destruction of its natural habitat. This has led to displacement of native species, such as spider monkeys, who have been forced to approach residential areas in search of food and shelter.
The deforestation activities initially began three months ago, but were halted following protests from local residents. The Municipal Urban Development and Ecology Directorate subsequently suspended the work. Residents were informed that the area was to become a gas station, which sparked further outrage as it seemed to disregard the environmental impact.
The land in question is privately owned and is set to be developed with buildings. However, environmental advocates are urging for the preservation of green spaces amidst the construction work, to prevent the creation of large concrete expanses that contribute to heat generation.
Currently, no signage has been placed at the site indicating the nature of the proposed work. This has left residents in a state of uncertainty, apprehensive about potential developments that could negatively impact them.
