Cozumel, Mexico — The expansion of the SSA International Cruise Pier in Cozumel is projected to bring significant economic benefits by accommodating larger vessels and attracting tourists with greater spending power and environmental awareness, according to Carmen Joaquín Hernández, president of the Cozumel Business Coordinating Council (CCE).
Economic and Environmental Considerations
The project, which requires all necessary permits and environmental reviews, aims to not only increase tourist numbers but also encourage the island to diversify its offerings for cruise passengers. Hernández emphasized that the expansion will compel the destination to adapt its strategy to meet the expectations of higher-spending visitors.
"Those who arrive by cruise ship spend money on the island, and if they come on larger ships, they can spend even more," Hernández explained. "We must analyze why passengers spend more in other destinations and adjust our products and services accordingly to boost consumption in Cozumel. However, this will depend on the business sector."
Infrastructure and Sustainability
The development of tourism infrastructure and urban growth must align with the sector's demands, Hernández noted. She highlighted the importance of the Environmental Sanitation Fee (DSA), which should be allocated toward destination improvements such as drainage systems, water management, and the submarine cable project.
"Everyone must contribute their part—whether it’s maintaining cleanliness, enhancing services, or presenting a better image to tourists," she stressed. "It’s up to us to take advantage of this opportunity by offering what passengers seek and ensuring they find it in Cozumel."
Promoting Natural Resource Protection
From a business perspective, Hernández also underscored the need to promote the protection of natural resources in destination marketing. She warned that preserving Cozumel’s environment is essential for its continued appeal and should be communicated to visitors.
"If we want to keep enjoying Cozumel, we must protect it, and this is something we should also encourage among tourists," she said.
The expansion is expected to position Cozumel as a more competitive destination while fostering sustainable tourism practices.
