The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) is hosting an event titled "Discovering the Wings of Cozumel, Birds and Fauna of the Island". The event aims to engage the local community in environmental preservation efforts. It is scheduled for Saturday, December 28, and will kick off at 4:00 p.m. at Corazón Urban Park.
This initiative is part of the New Agreement for Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The FPMC's goal is to involve people of all ages in programs that highlight the importance of protecting Cozumel's unique flora and fauna. This was confirmed by Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the general director of FPMC.
The Department of Pedagogy and Social Assistance (PAS), in collaboration with the group "Birdwatching in Cozumel" and the team from Corazón Urban Park, is coordinating the event. Attendees will enjoy a talk by biologist Adrián Andrés Tun Cano, who will discuss the endemic, subspecies, and migratory birds that call the island home. The talk will also cover the crucial role that birds play in ecosystems, such as seed propagation, pest management, and reproduction.
Additionally, a bird-watching activity will be held throughout the day. This activity aims to help participants identify the species that inhabit the urban environment, thereby strengthening the community's connection to nature and raising awareness about Cozumel's biodiversity.
The event will also feature recreational activities using games made from reused materials. The FPMC continues to offer educational opportunities and encourages environmental preservation. Everyone is invited to this free event, which combines knowledge, awareness, and direct contact with the island's natural abundance.
