A prolonged power outage in Aldea Zama, Tulum, led to substantial financial losses for local businesses and restaurants. The power was not restored until late in the evening, preventing these establishments from operating throughout the day.
The Hotel Association reported complaints from the sector, with the Copal hotel being particularly affected. The hotel experienced issues with its power supply and was forced to relocate guests to other accommodations.
Carla Patricia Andrade Piedras, the director of the Tulum Hotel Association, noted that power failures have become a frequent issue, especially in the Aldea Zama area. The Federal Electricity Commission has yet to provide an explanation for these recurring outages.
Piedras highlighted the impact of these power failures, stating, "These situations cause not only operational disruptions, but also damage to equipment such as air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions, and computers. This is true not only for hotels, but for residential properties as well."
While most hotels in the area have backup power supplies, local businesses and restaurants were forced to close their doors. The outage also affected perishable goods that require refrigeration.
One hotel employee suggested that the frequent power outages could be attributed to an increasing number of families illicitly connecting to the already strained power grid in the area behind the development.
