The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has denied the existence of a rumored list of foods permitted in cinemas. This list has been circulating on social media, causing confusion among consumers. Profeco has clarified that it has not issued any official statement or publication on this matter.
The agency emphasized that there is no official document that either authorizes or limits the entry of specific foods into movie theaters. The speculation and confusion have stemmed from unverified social media posts.
According to Article 58 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law, service providers cannot deny or condition goods, products, or services based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual preference, religion, or any other characteristic. The law also states that providers cannot discriminate, condition consumption, or apply unjustified exclusion practices, unless there are security or tranquility concerns within the establishment.
However, Profeco also pointed out that when purchasing a ticket, customers agree to the terms and conditions of the cinema's adhesion contract. As stated in Article 42 of the same law, the provider is obliged to deliver the goods or provide the service according to the terms and conditions offered or implied in the advertising or information displayed.
Iván Escalante Ruíz, the head of Profeco, clarified that if a cinema's adhesion contract prohibits the entry of external food, consumers must abide by this rule. He suggested that if a consumer disagrees with this rule, they should choose a different cinema that does not have this limitation.
Profeco also specified that cinema employees cannot force customers to reveal the contents of their backpacks, as this would infringe on their personal freedom, as stated in Article 10 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law.
In light of the misinformation, Profeco reiterated that it has not authorized or published a list of foods allowed in cinemas. The agency encourages consumers to seek information only through its official channels to avoid confusion.
