Highway 307, stretching from Cancún to Chetumal, is in a state of significant disrepair, with the exception of the recently renovated Luis Donaldo Colosio boulevard. The Riviera Maya Hotel Association has announced that federal funds have been secured for its repair.
Toni Cháves, the president of the association, confirmed that they have successfully lobbied for a budget to fix the highway through the governor's office. The budget will also cover the repair of some access routes to various areas, including Puerto Aventuras.
Cháves explained that the deterioration of Highway 307 is a federal issue. Initially, the Maya Train project was planned to run alongside the highway, which led to the responsibility for its repair being transferred to Fonatur by SCT. However, when the decision was made not to run the train along the highway, the responsibility was passed back to SCT, which by then lacked the necessary resources. The association is now managing the repair project at the federal level.
In a recent meeting with the Quintana Roo governor, Mara Lezama, it was confirmed that the funds for the repair have been allocated. However, the start of the repair work is pending the completion of heavy truck traffic for the Maya Train project to prevent further damage to the road.
The repair work is scheduled to begin in November, starting from Cancún and moving south. The plan is to have the repair work completed or near completion by the time it reaches the southern end. This strategy is aimed at ensuring that work in the south is finished or nearly finished.
Cháves emphasized the importance of Highway 307, as it is the only route connecting 12 destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. He stressed the need for the highway to meet the standards expected by the tourism sector.
