Atenea Gómez Ricalde, the Municipal President of Isla Mujeres, recently joined Linda Saray Cobos Castro, the head of the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (Sedarpe), to distribute electronic cards to local fishermen. The cards were provided through a state program called "Support during Fishing Banning Period for Fishermen".

The event took place at the Blue Dome in the island area. During the ceremony, the Mayor of Isla Mujeres expressed her gratitude to the first female Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, for her support of the fishing sector. This sector is a critical part of the local economy and the identity of Isla Mujeres.

As a result of this initiative, 285 fishermen and their families in Isla Mujeres will have improved living conditions during periods when fishing is banned, as well as during times of adverse weather. This is particularly important given the recent heavy rains experienced in the municipality.

The beneficiaries of this program are members of five fishing cooperatives. The program not only provides financial support for these families, but also promotes the preservation of various marine species such as octopus, snails, lobsters, grouper, and shark through fishing bans. For example, a ban on lobster fishing begins on July 1 each year.

Mayor Gómez reiterated her commitment to the fishing sector, stating that the electronic cards will enable fishermen and their families to purchase basic food items. She concluded by saying, "Our friends, the fishermen, will always have a helping hand in this Government. We will continue working closely with our beloved Governor to bring well-being and shared prosperity to everyone."
