A fire erupted early this morning in the Tulum building of the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda hotel, situated north of Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Maya. Eyewitnesses claim the fire originated from a thatched roof atop the three-story building, quickly spreading to a Guano shed that covered the upper balconies. This incident sparked panic among the hundreds of tourists residing at the hotel.
Despite the swift response from the hotel staff, guests reported that the fire-fighting equipment on-site was ineffective. The fire hoses reportedly had inadequate water pressure, reaching a mere three meters, which hampered initial fire control efforts. The images provided show visible flames and thick smoke, suggesting a substantial fire that was difficult to manage due to the reported faulty fire-fighting equipment.
Thankfully, no injuries or individuals affected by the fire have been reported so far. However, the incident did create a wave of worry among the tourists, who were evacuated as staff and emergency services addressed the situation.
Local authorities, in conjunction with hotel management, are currently investigating the cause of the fire and evaluating the extent of the material damage to the Tulum building.
