The "First Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Journey" in Cancun, held from November 18 to 20, has significantly improved the quality of life for children with this congenital deformity. The event was supported by the DIF Quintana Roo System and the State Secretariat of Health.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, along with Verónica Lezama Espinosa, the honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo System, visited the patients and their families who benefited from the event. The goal of the "First Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Journey" was to enhance the living standards of the institution's priority groups, according to Flavio Carlos Rosado, Secretary of Health. The initiative is part of the New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development, aimed at giving children equal opportunities for health and wellbeing.
During her visit, Governor Mara Lezama spoke with the families of the children who had undergone surgery. She reaffirmed her commitment to continuing to work towards improving health for all, in line with the values of her government. She also praised and recognized the efforts of the volunteer medical-surgical team that made the surgeries possible. She emphasized that these actions were made possible through the collaboration with the DIF Quintana Roo System and the Health Secretariat.
Verónica Lezama, honorary president of the state DIF, expressed her gratitude to the volunteer surgical doctors and maxillofacial surgeon, Juan Guevara Mejía, for their involvement in social assistance tasks. The DIF System provided accommodation and food for the medical and operational team, as well as the relatives of the surgery beneficiaries. This allowed them to stay informed and follow the recovery process of their patients.
The Secretary of Health explained that cleft palate is a craniofacial anomaly of congenital origin, which affects the patient both physically and psychologically. Thus, appropriate treatment for affected children will significantly improve their daily life, nutrition, and jaw development.
