PUERTO MORELOS – FONATUR and the Commissariat Ejidal of Puerto Morelos are working together on the construction of the new highway between Cancun and Tulum.
The National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (FONATUR), is working in coordination with the Commissariat Ejidal of Puerto Morelos to obtain legal certainty of the easement of the alternate route of the main highway between Cancun and Tulum.
The original plans for the alternative route project has been considerably expanded. FONATUR has established the importance of having a parallel highway to not only accommodate the road works for the Mayan Train over the next several years, but also the rapid growth of the tourist industry in the Mexican Caribbean.
Braulio Núñez, president of the Puerto Morelos Commissariat, explained that the head of FONATUR Rogelio Jiménez Pons and Raúl Bermúdez, head of the FONATUR office in Cancun, have traced the route to build the alternate path in three stages, which has expanded its magnitude.
At first, there was talk of building the new access road along the path of the high tension power lines stretching from Huayacán Avenue to the Ruta de Cenotes. However, now the possibility has been raised of building more than 120 kilometers of new highway and extending it all the way south to the border in Tulum.
“Currently we are working hand in hand with FONATUR for the legal certainty of the right of way in the section that corresponds to Puerto Morelos. In this case, the alternative route to divert traffic and allow work on the Mayan Train on the main road, ” explained Nuñez.
FONATUR was already able to quickly open an alternate path for traffic in the area they are repairing on highway 307 south of Puerto Morelos. This work was needed due to the geological fault that opened up in the tourist corridor of the highway, between Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
They are now coordinating with the ejido commissariats to be obtain legal certainty in the areas where the proposed alternate road will pass.
In the case of the land located in the municipality of Puerto Morelos, work is already underway to obtain that legal certainty and achieve a comprehensive traffic solution which may become an inter-state highway.
