Luis Fernando Pérez Avilés, also known as "Commander Cobra", a former police officer in Tulum, was recently apprehended in the Nuevo Progreso neighborhood of Chetumal. The arrest was orchestrated by the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) after an extensive search. A reward of 1.5 million pesos had been offered for information leading to his capture. The FGE had recently increased the reward for both Pérez Avilés and Eligio Ciau Canul, another ex-officer, who are both implicated in forced disappearances in Quintana Roo. Ciau Canul is still at large, but the arrest of "Cobra" marks a significant step forward in the ongoing investigations into these serious crimes that have shocked the region.
Pérez Avilés held several high-ranking positions during his tenure as a police officer, including police chief of Benito Juarez during a period of single command, under the oversight of Alberto Capella. He later served as the director of social proximity in Tulum. However, his career took a drastic turn when he was implicated in illegal activities and forced disappearances, leading to his dismissal and subsequent legal pursuit. As of now, it remains unclear whether his arrest was the result of a tip-off or the outcome of independent investigations. More information about his arrest is expected to be released in the coming days, and progress in the related legal proceedings is anticipated.
The FGE is still investigating the circumstances surrounding his arrest, trying to determine whether it was the result of a citizen's complaint or their own intelligence work. In the meantime, authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information about Eligio Ciau Canul in an effort to bring all those involved in the forced disappearances to justice.
